Battery, starter or alternator: telling them apart
The three parts work as a team, which is why one failure gets blamed on another. The battery stores the energy to crank the engine, the starter uses it to turn the engine over, and the alternator recharges the battery once the engine runs. A bad alternator slowly drains a good battery, and a weak battery can make a healthy starter sound tired, so swapping parts until it starts is how people end up buying two.
Our test checks all three. We load-test the battery, measure what the starter draws while cranking, and check the alternator's output with the engine running. Then you get one answer, with the readings, and replace only the part that failed. Modern batteries are not all the same
Many newer vehicles, especially those with engine start-stop, leave the factory with an AGM or EFB battery instead of a conventional one. Battery maker VARTA states the rule plainly: an AGM must be replaced with an AGM, and an EFB with an EFB or an AGM. On these vehicles the battery management system is also programmed to the new battery with a diagnostic tool, so the charging strategy matches what is installed. Skip either step and the new battery can fail early or the start-stop system stops working.
Diesel trucks bring their own setup. Many Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins pickups run two batteries, and a weak one drags the good one down, so we test them separately and generally replace them as a pair.
